What is subject line A/B testing?

How to design the test correctly

  • You need a sufficient sample size: With a list under 1,000 people, A/B test results lack statistical significance — treat them as signals, not conclusions.
  • Send both groups at the same time: Send group A and group B in the same morning or evening window — not group A Tuesday morning and group B Wednesday afternoon.
  • Log results in a tracker: Use a Google Sheet: subject A, subject B, open rate A, open rate B, send date, email type, winner.

Reading results and applying them

After 5–10 tests you will start to see clear patterns: does your audience prefer short or long subject lines? Questions or statements? Emoji or not? Use these patterns as defaults when writing all future subjects.

Do not expect a single test to give you a definitive answer. Email marketing is a long-term process.
