This is a well-known quirk of how Twitter delivers video. Understanding what's actually happening makes it obvious which tools work and which ones don't.
Why Twitter Videos Download Without Audio
Twitter streams video using MPEG-DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP). In this format, the video track and the audio track are delivered as separate streams. When you watch on Twitter's app or website, the player merges them in real time — so you hear sound normally.
When a low-quality download tool fetches the video, it often grabs only the video stream and skips the audio stream entirely. The result: a silent MP4.
A proper Twitter downloader needs to:
- Fetch both the video stream and the audio stream separately
- Merge them into a single MP4 file (server-side or client-side)
- Deliver the merged file to you
Tools that skip the merge step give you either a silent video or audio with no picture.

What About Twitter GIFs?
Twitter GIFs aren't real GIF files. They're short, looping MP4 videos with no audio track — that's just how GIF-format content works on Twitter. When you download a Twitter GIF, you get a silent looping MP4. This is expected behavior, not a bug.

Common Download Errors
- "Video unavailable": The tweet is from a private account. You need to follow that account (and be logged in) to access its content.
- Corrupted file: Usually a network interruption during the merge step. Retry on a stable connection.
- Lower quality than expected: Twitter caps uploads at 1080p. If the original was 4K, Twitter already compressed it on their end — the downloader can only retrieve what Twitter stores.
