Apple Music is a streaming service — when you cancel your subscription, all music you've "added to your library" becomes unplayable. If you want to keep tracks from your own subscription for offline listening, here's what you need to know first.
Important DRM note: Most Apple Music tracks have DRM (Digital Rights Management). Exporting to MP3 is only ethically valid for your own personal use — never for sharing or redistribution. That's a limit worth respecting.
Streaming vs. Purchased Music — An Important Distinction
Before doing anything, distinguish between two types of content in Apple Music:
- Streaming tracks from your subscription: You can only listen while your subscription is active. Cancel = lose access.
- Music purchased from iTunes Store: You own it permanently, independent of any subscription. Download directly in the Music app.
If you've bought music through iTunes, downloading directly in the Music app (Mac/iPhone) is the simple, fully legal approach — no third-party tools needed.
Exporting Streaming Tracks From Your Subscription — Practical Methods
For streamed (not purchased) tracks, the process is more complex and typically involves desktop recording software. The most common approach:
Use desktop recording software (loopback from sound card)
- Install Audacity (free) or similar software
- Configure Audacity to record from your sound card's "loopback" (audio playing through your computer)
- Open Apple Music, play the track you want to save
- Audacity records it → export as MP3
Quality depends on your sound card. This is a valid personal-use approach — but slow because you must play tracks in real time.
Using Klypio for publicly shared tracks
Some Apple Music tracks have public share URLs. If a track from your subscription has a shareable link, you may be able to use Klypio to process it — but only for content you've subscribed to and strictly for personal use.
How to Avoid Losing Music When Canceling Apple Music
Rather than complex exports, simpler alternatives:
- Buy your favorites: Before canceling, purchase tracks you truly want to keep via iTunes Store
- Transfer playlists: Use an app like SongShift to move playlists to Spotify or YouTube Music
- Save the list: At minimum, screenshot your favorites so you can find them on another platform
