A 30-60 minute video without chapters is painful for viewers: they have to scrub endlessly to find what they need, or they just leave. Chapters don't just improve viewer experience — YouTube also displays them as rich snippets in Google Search, giving your video additional exposure.
Note: AI-generated chapters are a draft — you must review timestamps and chapter titles before publishing. AI sometimes places timestamps slightly off or creates overly generic titles.
Why chapters matter for long-form video
- Improves retention — viewers can skip to the part they want instead of leaving
- YouTube displays chapters as rich snippets in Google Search
- Makes content repurposing easier — each chapter can become a standalone clip
- Increases rewatch rate — viewers know where everything is and return more easily
How AI generates chapters automatically
Step 1: Get a transcript
Most AI chapter tools need a transcript as input. Options:
- Use YouTube's auto-transcript feature (click "..." below the video → "Open transcript")
- Use Whisper AI (free, run locally or via Hugging Face) to generate a transcript from your audio/video file
- Use Otter.ai, Descript, or Riverside.fm if you already use them for recording
Step 2: Use AI to analyze and generate chapters
Paste the transcript into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini with this prompt:
"This is a transcript for a [X-minute] video. Please create 5-8 chapters in the format: [MM:SS] - [Chapter title]. Keep titles concise, under 50 characters, accurately describing that section's content."
Step 3: Review and edit
AI will suggest timestamps and titles — but you MUST verify each one:
- Are the timestamps accurate? (AI sometimes miscalculates by a few seconds)
- Do the titles accurately describe the content?
- Is the number of chapters reasonable? (too many can feel cluttered)
Step 4: Add to YouTube
Paste into the video description with the first chapter starting at 0:00. YouTube automatically detects and creates the chapter bar.
