If your video features children — even briefly — and faces, school names, licence plates, or addresses are visible, you face serious privacy and legal risks. AI can help you identify these issues faster, but it cannot replace the human review step.
IMPORTANT: Redacting identifying information about minors is MANDATORY, not optional. AI is a supporting tool (a secondary layer) — human review of the full video before publishing is always required. No AI guarantees 100% detection in all cases.
What identifying information needs to be redacted?
- Children's faces: Especially clearly visible, recognisable faces
- Names on uniforms, bags, or school materials: School names, student names
- Addresses and locations: Street names, licence plates, school entrances
- Voice: In some contexts, a child's voice may also need consideration
- Parent/guardian information: If the video indirectly reveals family details
How can AI help?
Some AI tools can assist:
- Face detection + auto-blur: Tools such as Blur Video AI or DaVinci Resolve's built-in features can detect faces and blur them automatically. Manual verification is still required afterwards.
- OCR (text recognition): AI can read on-screen text — use it to find names, addresses, or phone numbers that appear in the frame. OCR is not perfect — handwriting, angled text, and unusual fonts are often missed.
- Speech-to-text: Convert spoken audio to text, then search for sensitive keywords. Audio playback verification is still needed.
Correct redaction workflow
- Run AI face detection → review the list of frames with detected faces → manually blur frames the AI missed
- Run OCR on the video → review the output → blur or cut segments containing sensitive information
- Watch the entire video from start to finish one more time with your own eyes — this step cannot be skipped
- If in doubt → do not publish. Obtain explicit written consent from parents or guardians before filming
