You have a finished video script but can't visualize how each shot should look? A storyboard helps you plan every shot in advance — but not everyone has drawing skills. AI can help you create text-based storyboards or detailed visual descriptions directly from your script.
Important note: AI-generated storyboards are a support tool — output is a draft for you to adjust. You still need to review each scene and adapt it to your actual shooting conditions and budget.
What is a storyboard and why do creators need one?
A storyboard is a visual plan of each shot in sequence — describing camera angle, subject action within frame, and audio/dialogue. Even without cinematic-level storyboards, creators benefit from a basic shot list:
- Don't miss critical shots when filming on location (no second chance)
- Film faster because you know exactly what you need
- Easier to explain to a cameraman or team member
How to use AI to create a storyboard from script — step by step
Step 1 — Prepare your script in an AI-readable format
Break the script into small chunks (scene/shot), each with: the spoken content/dialogue and the main idea you want to convey. No complex formatting needed — just keep it clear.
Step 2 — Prompt AI to describe visuals for each scene
Paste your script into ChatGPT or Claude with a prompt like:
"Here is my video script. Create a text-based storyboard: for each script segment, describe: (1) The appropriate camera angle (wide shot, close-up, over-the-shoulder…), (2) The subject's action within the frame, (3) Appropriate background/setting, (4) Suggested lighting if applicable. Format as a table: Scene # | Script | Camera angle | Action | Background. Here is my script: [paste script]"
Step 3 — Review and adjust for your real-world conditions
AI may suggest impractical scenes (studio rental, large crews, expensive equipment). Read through each scene and adapt it to your actual budget and shooting environment.
Example AI output for one scene
| Scene | Script | Camera angle | Action | Background |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 01 | "Today I'll share 3 ways to organize your video library…" | Medium shot, eye level | Looking directly at camera, holding phone or using hand gestures | Clean workspace corner, natural light from window on left side |
