Many creators invest effort in repurposing content without seeing results because they only copy-paste — posting the same video everywhere and hoping for the best. Effective repurposing requires understanding the specific rules of each platform.
Why do repurposing rules differ by platform?
Each platform has a different audience, different preferred formats, and different distribution algorithms. A 15-minute YouTube video cannot simply be trimmed to 60 seconds to become a Reel — you need to change the hook, structure, and sometimes even the storytelling angle.
Platform-specific repurposing rules
YouTube → TikTok / Reels / Shorts
- What to extract: A moment with a strong insight or a surprising answer — not a summary
- What to change: Reframe the hook for vertical format, add captions for silent viewing, faster speaking pace
- Avoid: Do not use the YouTube intro (usually slow) as the Shorts opening
- Length: 30–90 seconds for Shorts/Reels; TikTok accepts longer (2–3 minutes) if the hook is strong enough
YouTube / Podcast → Blog post
- What to extract: The most information-dense section of the transcript, not all of it
- What to change: Rewrite for reading style — remove filler words, add headers, add reference links
- Avoid: Do not paste a raw transcript — readers and listeners need different experiences
Long-form YouTube → Email newsletter
- What to extract: 3 main points + CTA to watch the full video
- Format: Bullet points, under 300 words, clear link
- Avoid: Do not summarise the entire video — the email goal is to drive traffic, not replace the video
TikTok / Reels → Pinterest / YouTube Shorts
- What to extract: Clips that already performed well on TikTok/Instagram
- What to change: Remove the original platform watermark before posting elsewhere
- Avoid: Do not cross-post with a watermark — algorithms penalise content carrying a competitor's logo
Podcast → Quote cards / Audiograms
- What to extract: 1–2 strong quotes that can stand alone
- Format: Square image with quote text + 30-second audiogram for Stories
- Avoid: Quotes longer than 3 lines are hard to read on mobile
A practical repurposing workflow
- Choose content that already performed well (high views, saves, or comments)
- Identify 2–3 platforms to repurpose to
- For each platform, apply platform-specific rules — no copy-pasting
- Schedule posts at least 2–3 days apart to avoid audience fatigue
