Most podcasters wait for advertisers to reach out — but that typically only happens once you already have a large audience. If you want to monetize earlier, you need to proactively find and approach suitable advertisers. Here's the step-by-step process.
Where to find the right advertisers
1. Listen to podcasts in your niche
Brands already advertising in competitor podcasts (same niche, same audience) are your perfect targets — they've already proven to themselves that podcast advertising works and are actively spending on it. Listen to a few episodes, note down advertiser names.
2. Read newsletters in your niche
Subscribe to newsletters covering the same topics as your podcast. Brands sponsoring newsletters frequently also sponsor podcasts — and their budget is already approved for this content type.
3. Use podcast advertising platforms
Platforms like Podcorn, Gumball, or the Spotify Audience Network connect podcasters with advertisers. Useful when you don't yet have direct brand relationships.
4. Local / SMB brands
Smaller local brands are less competed for by other podcasters — they may pay less but are more willing to try. Particularly relevant if your audience is geographically concentrated.

Subject: Podcast partnership for [Podcast Name] — reaching [audience description] Hi [Contact Name], I host [Podcast Name], a podcast about [topic in 1 sentence] for [audience description]. I noticed [Brand] sponsors [podcast/newsletter X] which reaches a similar audience — thought there might be a fit. Quick stats: - Episodes published: [number] - Average listens per episode: [number] - Audience: [brief description] I'd love to explore a mid-roll sponsorship for [number] episodes. Do you have 15 minutes for a quick call to see if there's a fit? [Your name] [Podcast website / media kit link]
Common mistakes to avoid
- Outreach too early: Under 500 downloads/episode makes it very hard to convince brands. Build audience first while preparing your media kit.
- Emails that are too long: Media buyers are busy — outreach should be short, under 150 words
- No media kit: Prepare a simple one-page PDF with stats, audience info, and ad format options before outreaching
- Wrong contact: Find the right person — usually Marketing Manager or Brand Partnerships Manager, not the CEO
Track your outreach
Track each outreach in a simple file: brand name, date sent, status (sent / replied / declined / in negotiation). Follow up once after 5-7 days if no response — just once.
