OBS Replay Buffer Setup Guide for Creators 2026 — Free Guide

How to configure OBS replay buffer for creators in 2026 — capture your best moments without recording entire streams.

Replay buffer is one of OBS's most useful features that many creators haven't used properly. Instead of recording an entire stream and scrubbing back for highlights, one keypress saves the last 30-60 seconds instantly. Here's how to set it up right in 2026.

What Is Replay Buffer?

Replay buffer works as a continuous loop — OBS always keeps the last N seconds of video in RAM. When you press the "Save Replay" hotkey, OBS writes exactly those N seconds to a video file.

Benefits: No need to record everything, saves hard drive space, never miss a great moment because you forgot to hit record.

Configuring Replay Buffer in OBS

Step 1: Enable Replay Buffer

Open OBS → Settings → Output → switch to the Replay Buffer tab. Check Enable Replay Buffer.

Step 2: Choose buffer duration

  • 30 seconds: Enough for gaming highlights, short reactions
  • 60 seconds: Better for longer gameplay or podcast segments
  • 120 seconds: Requires more RAM (~1-2GB at 1080p60 with 6000kbps bitrate)

RAM estimation formula: bitrate (Mbps) × duration (seconds) / 8 = MB of RAM. Example: 6Mbps × 60s / 8 = 45MB — very lightweight.

Step 3: Assign a hotkey

Settings → Hotkeys → find Save Replay. Assign an easy-to-remember key like F9 or Alt+R. Make sure it doesn't conflict with your game controls.

Step 4: Set your save folder

Settings → Output → Recording Path — this is where OBS saves replay buffer files. Choose a fast drive (SSD or 7200rpm HDD or faster).

Practical Tips for Creators

  • Use hardware encoding if available: NVENC (Nvidia) or AMF (AMD) reduces CPU load during continuous buffering
  • Set appropriate bitrate: 6000-8000kbps for 1080p60 is plenty for highlight clips
  • Pair with full recordings: If you need complete recordings, see How to Bulk Export Your Own OBS Recordings
  • Post-stream clipping: After saving replays, use Klypio to organize and share highlights across platforms
