When collaborating with another creator — co-producing videos, splitting revenue, or co-hosting events — conflict will eventually happen. Without a framework to handle it, a small disagreement can destroy both the relationship and the project. This template is a practical starting point for building your own process.
Important note: This template is a reference document only — it does not replace legal advice. For complex disputes or significant amounts of money, consult a qualified legal professional.
4 common types of creator partnership conflict
- Revenue disputes: Revenue not split per agreed ratio, lack of transparency in earnings reporting
- Content ownership disputes: Who can use the video/audio after the project ends
- Deadline and quality disputes: One party misses deadlines or delivers below agreed quality
- Brand direction disputes: Disagreement on tone, content topics, or sponsor acceptance
3-step conflict resolution process
-
Step 1 — Direct conversation (within 48 hours):
Meet in person or on a video call — do not resolve conflicts via text or DMs, as they are too easy to misread. Each party states their perspective without interruption. Document the discussion in writing afterwards.
-
Step 2 — Written solution proposal:
After the meeting, each party sends an email summarising their understanding and proposing a concrete solution. This written record is important evidence if the dispute escalates.
-
Step 3 — Third-party mediation (if needed):
Ask someone both parties trust to mediate. If you cannot agree on a mediator, or if significant money is involved — consult a lawyer.
Email template for step 2 — Solution proposal
Subject: [Project Name] — Proposed resolution Hi [Partner Name], Following our call on [date], here is my summary of the issue as I understand it: - [Describe the issue from your perspective] I propose the following resolution: - [Specific solution 1] - [Specific solution 2] Please respond by [date]. If we cannot reach an agreement by then, I suggest we ask [mediator name] to help facilitate. Best regards, [Your Name]
Conflict resolution clause to include in your contract
The best approach is to include this process in your agreement from the start. Reference clause (not a legal document — have a lawyer review before use):
"The parties agree to resolve disputes through good-faith negotiation within 14 days. If no agreement is reached, the parties will engage a mutually agreed third-party mediator before initiating any legal proceedings."
