You're using a VTuber rigging app — VTube Studio, Live2DViewerEx, or another tool — and want to move to a new platform, or simply back up your assets safely. how to migrate and archive your own VTuber assets without losing data.
Ownership note: This guide only applies to your own assets / your own rig — meaning a rig you commissioned and paid an artist for, or one you created yourself. It does not cover other people's assets, rigging templates with no redistribution rights, or models from libraries with unverified licenses.
What to archive
Before migrating, make sure you have every file type:
- Original PSD file: The layered Photoshop file from your artist — the single most important source file
- Rigged model files (.moc3, .model3.json for Live2D): The fully rigged model
- Textures and sprites: PNG files for each body part
- Expression files: Expression configuration files
- Physics settings: Physics config for hair and costume movement
- Contract and receipts: Email or invoice from your artist confirming you own the rig
How to migrate to a new platform
VTube Studio to another app
- Open VTube Studio → locate the model folder on your device (usually under
Documents/Live2DViewerExor similar) - Copy the entire model folder — preserve the folder structure exactly
- Paste into the new platform directory or backup drive
- Test: open the model in the new platform and verify all expressions and physics work correctly
Cloud backup options
- Google Drive / OneDrive: Works for files under 15GB — auto-syncs
- External SSD: Always keep at least one offline backup, independent of internet
- Klypio: Use Klypio app or @KlypioBot to save reference videos, motion capture clips, or demo recordings of your own rig
Post-migration checklist
- Do all expressions trigger correctly?
- Is hair and costume physics behaving as expected?
- Do texture colors match the original?
- Is the artist contract stored in the same archive folder?
License limits — even when it's your rig
Even when you own the rig, your commission contract typically restricts:
- Reselling the rig — most commission contracts prohibit this
- Using the rig to train AI without a separate agreement
- Lending the rig to others without an explicit arrangement
