You've decided to leave Instagram — or you want to start fresh with a new account. Before you hit delete, make sure you've saved everything. Instagram gives you 30 days after deactivation to download your data, but the export file isn't always complete.
Instagram's official data export
Instagram has a built-in feature to download all your data:
- Go to Settings → Account → Download Your Data (or use the browser: instagram.com/download/request)
- Enter your email → choose HTML or JSON format → click Request
- Instagram emails a download link within 24–48 hours — the link is valid for 4 days
- Download the .zip file → unzip → the
videos/folder contains all your posted videos
Important note: The export typically includes posts, Reels, and Highlighted stories — but regular stories that already expired are not saved. If you didn't enable Story Archive beforehand, those stories are gone.
What Instagram's export does NOT include
- Expired stories (if Story Archive was not enabled)
- Reels that used clips from other people's content (due to rights restrictions)
- Live videos that have ended (if not manually saved)
Extra backup with Klypio (for important videos)
For videos you want to ensure you have at full original quality:
- Open each post on Instagram → copy the post link
- Go to klypio.com/instagram-video-downloader → paste the link → download the original MP4
Especially useful for Reels — Instagram's export sometimes re-compresses the video, while Klypio fetches the original unprocessed file.
