Podcast episode trailers are the most underused micro-marketing tool in a creator's toolkit. A well-chosen 60-second clip from an upcoming episode can drive more new listeners than a long caption on social media.
What is a podcast episode trailer?
An episode trailer is a short audio clip — typically 30 to 90 seconds — taken from a highlight in an upcoming episode, or occasionally recorded as a standalone promo. The goal: spark curiosity, build anticipation, and get people to click the full episode.
Trailers differ from "teasers" in that they're more tightly focused on a single compelling hook.
60-second trailer structure template
Seconds 0-10: Strong hook
Start immediately with the most compelling moment in the episode — a bold statement, a surprising stat, or a question that creates genuine curiosity.
Example: "90% of podcasters quit within six months. Today we're talking about exactly why — and how to avoid it."
Seconds 10-40: Content teaser
3 to 4 quick points from the episode. Don't spoil the conclusion — just hint enough that listeners want more.
Example: "We'll cover: the number one reason podcasts die, how to build a sustainable workflow, and one free tool that saves three hours a week."
Seconds 40-55: Social proof / context
Guest name (if applicable), short credential, or context about why this episode matters.
Seconds 55-60: Clear CTA
One action only — don't stack CTAs in a short trailer.
Example: "Episode drops [date]. Subscribe now so you don't miss it."
How to create a trailer from a recorded episode
- Listen through the full episode, marking timestamps for your 5-7 best moments
- Select the strongest hook (seconds 0-10) and 2-3 teaser snippets
- Edit in Audacity, Descript, or Adobe Audition — cut, stitch, normalize audio levels
- Add light background music if your show uses it — check license terms first
- Export as MP3, upload to your podcast feed as a separate "trailer" episode, or repurpose for social
Where to distribute your trailer
- Podcast feed: Create a "trailer" episode type on Spotify for Podcasters, Apple Podcasts — it appears before the main episode
- Reels / TikTok: Convert audio to short video with a waveform animation (Headliner.app or Canva)
- Instagram Stories: 15-30 second audio clip with text overlay
- Telegram: Send audio clips to your channel via @KlypioBot
