Getting invited onto a podcast is a great brand-building opportunity — but many guests show up underprepared, resulting in poor audio, rambling answers, or missed chances to promote their work. Complete pre-interview checklist so you walk into every recording ready.
Why a pre-interview checklist matters
Podcast hosts record 3–5 episodes per week. They don't have time to guide every guest through setup. Preparation is your responsibility — and well-prepared guests get invited back and referred to other shows.
Tech checklist (24 hours before)
- Mic test: record 2 minutes, listen back — no echo, no background noise
- Wired headphones (avoid Bluetooth — lag and dropouts kill recordings)
- Quiet room: turn off A/C if it hums, tell household members not to interrupt
- Internet: wired ethernet over WiFi if using Zoom/Riverside
- Camera (if video): face the light source, avoid backlit windows
- Test the recording room link with the host at least 30 minutes early
Content checklist (48 hours before)
- Read the outline or questions the host sent — if none, ask proactively
- Prepare 2–3 specific short stories (avoid vague generalities)
- Define the one message you want listeners to remember from this episode
- Prepare your answer to "What do you want listeners to do next?" — usually the last question
- Write down any links/resources you'll mention — use short, speakable URLs
Common questions and how to handle them
- "Tell us your story" — prepare a 90-second version, never exceed 3 minutes
- "Biggest mistake you've made?" — one real story with a clear lesson
- "What book or tool do you recommend?" — 1–2 specific suggestions
- "Where can listeners find you?" — one primary channel, not a full social media list
