Most podcasters go silent after an episode publishes. That is a missed opportunity. A well-timed, genuine farewell follow-up keeps the relationship warm — guests may recommend you to others, come back for a second episode, or help amplify the episode they appeared in.
When to send the farewell follow-up
- Immediately after recording: A short thank-you — "Thank you so much for your time today, it was a genuinely interesting conversation!"
- When the episode publishes: Notify the guest and share the link so they can easily promote it if they wish
- 1–2 weeks after publishing: The formal farewell follow-up — share any available metrics and keep the connection alive
Farewell follow-up template (post-publish)
Subject: Thank you for joining [Podcast Name] — Episode [number] Hi [Guest Name], Your episode has been live for [X days/weeks] and I wanted to send one more thank you. [If you have metrics]: The episode has received [listen count/views] — listener feedback has been very positive, especially around the part where you talked about [specific topic]. I genuinely appreciated your perspective and I hope the episode is bringing value to my audience. If you ever want to come back for another episode or have a topic you would like to explore together — I would love to reconnect. All the best, [Your Name] [Podcast Name] | [Episode link]
Short informal farewell template
"Hi [Name]! The episode has hit [X] listens — thank you again so much. Hope we get to do another one together in the future!"
What to avoid
- Do not ask the guest to share the episode if they have not done so voluntarily — thank them first and let sharing happen naturally
- Do not make the message too long — a farewell should be brief and genuine
- Do not wait more than 2 weeks post-publish to follow up — the natural momentum fades
