Inviting a guest onto your podcast sounds straightforward — but without a clear agreement, disputes about replay rights, editing rights, or who can use the content can quickly become complicated.

Why do you need a guest agreement?
Even when inviting guests who appear without a fee, you still need to clarify several things:
- Broadcast rights: Are you allowed to publish the episode on all platforms?
- Repurposing rights: Can you cut clips for TikTok, Reels, or Shorts?
- Editing rights: If the guest says something inappropriate, can you cut it?
- Archive duration: How long does the episode stay online?
- Cancellation handling: If a guest cancels after recording — can you still publish?
Key clauses to include
1. Broadcast and distribution rights
Specify clearly which platforms the host may publish on — Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, and standard podcast directories. If the guest has specific restrictions (not on platform X), document them here.
2. Short-form repurposing rights
Short clips from podcasts (30 seconds to 3 minutes) are often major traffic drivers. The template should specify whether the host can create social clips and whether prior notification to the guest is required.
3. Editing rights
Hosts typically need the right to cut dead air, fix technical errors, or remove inappropriate content. This clause needs to be clear to prevent disputes after publication.
4. Episode removal requests
Few hosts think about this in advance — but it matters. If a guest later requests an episode be removed, are you obligated to do so? Within what timeframe? Make this explicit in your template.
Minimal template structure
- Parties (host and guest details)
- Scheduled recording date
- Distribution scope
- Repurposing rights
- Editing rights
- Cancellation and removal handling
- Signatures from both parties
